Magazine cover learner response
1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.
2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBI. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.
12 marks (B)
WWW: This is a good quality cover that captures the Gentlewoman look extremely impressively. You very much have to look carefully at the three covers on your blogpost to work out which one is yours which is a brilliant sign of professional-level work. The black and white works perfectly and fits the Gentlewoman’s style – in fact, I would disagree with your evaluation as putting images in black and white using post-production is completely fine and expected.
EBI: There are two factors that are keeping you out of the top level here (13-15 marks). Firstly, the magazine you have chosen to replicate is quite basic in terms of page design which means there are no real cover lines or requirements in terms of verbal codes or use of typography. Secondly, the central image is strong but perhaps a little busy in the background. Similarly, the face is quite dark and the hands look slightly over-exposed which keeps this from the very top level. Ultimately, I’d agree with your evaluation which is that a wider variety of shots – ideally in a studio setting – will help with future projects.
3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.) Notice the focus on narrative in the mark scheme for Media language.
4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?
To use a white studio background instead, and cover lines to help create a stronger narrative, and representation.
5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?
Definitely think about it thoroughly, I went through many ideas before landing on this one. Also, have a clear vision from the start because every step of the process counts and if you're unsure it affects the outcome, and it wont be a piece of work you're fully satisfied with,.
